Welcome back for those of you just joining us my name is Amanda Hammett and I’m known as the millennial translator because I help companies attract, retain and engage millennial talent while helping Millennials to develop the communication and leadership skills that are going to be necessary for them to leave corporate America in the very near future.
Now, since this is such a prevalent and ever-increasing issue in corporate America. I decided I need to share some practical and actionable advice just for you and even better, it’s all free in this video series. So, if you’ve not already seen them there are two videos before this one that have tips and downloadable guides.
I’m guessing if you’re watching this video on dealing with Millennials at work more than likely you’re experiencing some difficulties either with the Millennials you work with or the Millennials you manage. I guess it’s also safe to assume that the frustrations often leave you shaking your head and wondering exactly who these Millennials think they are? That’s something I hear all the time.
That frustration probably doesn’t just stay with you during working hours because let’s be honest, you spend a huge chunk of your day working so it’s only natural that once you get home not all of your frustrations are left at the office. Many times you take them home with you which means now these Millennials are not only affecting your work life, but they’re also affecting your personal life as well.
But what if you could minimize those frustrations? What if you could create a work environment that was not only enjoyable for you, but for your team as well. And then as you and your team really begun to mesh together and enjoy working together the team dynamics begin to shift and with that shift productivity levels increase beyond anything you have ever done before and we all know when productivity increases so does profitability. Now, as your team’s productivity increases become something of a buzz within your company, everyone is clamoring to know your secret.
How did you turn your team around? Maybe, even your boss calls you in and ask what’s your secret? I got a no now the question here is do you laugh? or do you share? or do you simply whisper one word. Millennials.
Now if your boss is like many of older generations in corporate America the word millennial is a lot like a four-letter word but really and truly it shouldn’t be because Millennials are ushering in an economy that is changing the world and in just a few short years they will make up 75% of the workforce according to the Brookings Institute. Seventy-five percent that’s three out of every four workers but how do you get this mythical place of high-performing Millennials the secret is engagement.
Now I’ve worked with a lot of companies who constantly monitor dashboards of what they call engagement, but really it’s just real-time metrics of productivity, real-time real engagement is human to human interactions with real engagement is when your team feels like you know them as a human being, you know what’s going on with them on a personal level and that you actually care about what’s going on with them personally.
Millennials are actually 54% more likely to be actively engaged at work when they genuinely like their direct manager real employee engagement doesn’t have to be hard, in fact, it really is just a lot of very small simple things that add up over time. Things like transparency and taking the time to notice things about your team and your team members.
You may be surprised to learn that you both love the same professional football team I hear constantly a lot of managers tell me that they’re already doing this engagement. But the fact of the matter is when I’m brought in and I ask poignant questions both to managers and their team, their idea of engagement tends to fall apart at the end of the day Millennials want to be treated like a human being just like every other employee. They long for human connection even as technologically connected as we are these days one-to-one human connection has become even more important because we get far less of it.
So in order to help you kick this off I’ve put together a list of 10 fast and easy engagement ideas that you can start implementing with your team today! And all you have to do is download it and get started.
So that’s it for this video series I hope that you have enjoyed it and learned a few things, but even more than learning a few things I hope that you actually take the time and implement some of the things you learned here because the implementation part is what really makes the difference.
